It always surprises me when there’s something written about SFF in the mainstream or publishing press and it’s not just laden with contempt, so this was actually a bit surprising to read. Clearly Sam Jordison, whoever you are, you’ve not realised that this isn’t the way to get ahead on the literary pages of the Guardian! A genuine love of books isn’t enough to make it you fool! You’ve got to be contrite in your admissions of geekery, not nostalgic, and be all the more dismissive of the sad unwashed people who read SFF – otherwise you’ll never develop the required bile and loathing to be asked about ‘real’ books!
Ah Margaret Atwood, you go those people with their twelve-sided dice how it should be done, if they don’t thank you for it the rest of the world will… No, you don’t have to admit you’re one of them.
Rare indeed, yon beasty! As ever, the debate continues, but almost all of it is on our side of the fence.
Yeah, it wouldn’t nearly bug me as much if I didn’t work in publishing, where the prevailing attitude is very much ‘it’s not literature, we’ve prefer it if you didn’t even call it fiction and thus infect real books.’
Rahoonery writ large.
And now I’ve learned a new word, excellent!
