Beowulf in 3D at the Imax, should have been great right? Unfortunately, I walked out thinking “meh”. Admittedly I’ve not read much more than the Penguin children’s version of the story, but in that Beowulf was a fair bit less of a git than he was in the movie. An irritating egomaniac isn’t the best hero, especially one who gets his clothes off with all the speed and enthusiasm as a drunk rugby player; CGI isn’t the best medium for a movie that lives and dies on the charisma of the hero; and why was the plot massively rewritten? If you’re going to tell the story, just tell it. That a movie exec has a focus group saying the original plot is too broken up to work for the lowest IQ moviegoers isn’t a good reason.
But after all that, I watched bits of Attack of the Clones again. I had forgotten just how frustrating that movie is for a writer. I’ve never done a screenplay in my life and I spend the whole movie alternating between cringing at the moronic writing, and thinking that even I could have punched up the screenplay without any experience. It’s just so badly executed, the child in me just feels betrayed…
I tried to enjoy Beowulf, but i just could not stop mocking it the entire time.

Clones…
I showed it to my wife, and we watched it in two parts.
When we stopped halfway the first night, she said, “this isn’t as bad as you said it was,” and I thought it wasn’t as bad as I remembered. Then, when we got to part II the second night – she decided it was worse! Everything goes to hell when Anakin follows Boba Fett, at which point it is just nonsensical.
Re: Clones…
Pretty much every part with Anakin in looks pretty tragic to me, especially the supposedly romantic bits. Seriously, you’ve got Jedi and Sith – this shouldn’t be too hard to get right! Episode one was dire, but as soon as Darth Maul appears on the screen it jumps a couple of notches up, even when the boy’s not even doing anything!

Sorry but my comment has nothing to do with your post. Just had to say thanks for finally writing a fantasy book doesn’t put me to sleep. Keep it up man, your work is my money well spent.
