Had forgotten what this feels like

Eighty pages into Dust of Dreams, which I’m going to read as one with Crippled God, and I have to say – I’ve no idea what’s going on. Can’t remember half the characters whose names I vaguely recognise, can remember very little of the previous books…..

And I’m loving it. The man’s brilliant.

  1. I’m very, very sad that the last book is coming out. I mean, I’m glad he’s not turning into Zombie Jordan, but…still…I’m really going to miss the Bridgeburners (what’s left of them).

    1. Don’t be sad! He’s already mentioned plans for the follow-up Malazan trilogy, it doesn’t really look like he’ll be leaving that world any time soon. I do kinda hope the next books will be a bit different though, as good as it is I want a series and setting to have some sort of end in sight – as it is, he and ICE seem to be planning at least half-a-dozen monster novels to run in parallel and there’s no end in sight.

  3. Strength and perseverance! Many many new characters in this one, and a LOT of exposition/introspection/random reflection – but also, and this is where I was grateful, explanations of who these people are and why they seem so familiar. :) Give it another hundred pages or so, and you’ll be right back in the thick of it.

I haven’t bought Crippled God yet because I refuse to believe that this amazing ride should be over.

  5. Tom, you will be SOOO happy you read them as one novel. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did. I kept getting all teary-eyed in THE CRIPPLED GOD. It was seriously epic. Like you though, I’m hoping that his next two trilogies are are bit more focused.

As for ICE’s stuff, I’m burning through STONEWIELDER right now. His writing is refreshingly…I don’t know…transparent? Straight-forward? I interviewed him the other day (to be published next Friday) and found out some awesome stuff.

    Freaking love it.

      1. Yeah, maybe “transparent” wasn’t quite the right word. Part way through Stonewielder, and it just seems easier to remember who people are and what’s going on in ICE’s series. To me it’s easier reading than Erikson. What I especially love is reading essentially the “other half” of the stories that Erikson tells. And at the rate ICE is going, his novel tentatively title Assail is going to be freaking awesome.

  7. Not bad, is it? I’m grateful that I was well insulated from the gushery before I read it, otherwise it would have interfered with the reading thereof.
