Having just got around to watching the Colour of Magic adaptation, it turned out to be as disappointing as I’d expected it to be. Hogfather, while not perfect was at least fun and a little more sober, but this was pants from start to, erm, about two-thirds where I got bored.
A tired old actor who’s completely wrong for the part and doesn’t understand that ‘fantasy’ means everything has to be hammed up as much as possible, a basic premise to fit two novels into one episode each… I’m sure the money’s gone to a good cause, but I doubt Mr P is exactly proud of the end result. Going Postal might of up better, unless David Jason decides he wants the title role there again, but TCOM was rushed rubbish. Anyone disagree?
Oddly enough I watched this last night and, while I thought Sean Astin did a fine job, Jason was a TERRIBLE piece of casting. From what I heard, tough, him playing Rincewind was the only way that they could funding.
I thought Astin was ok, but badly directed still. I think it was the only way they could get funding, yes, but no one’s going to cut me a break because I don’t get paid enough to write full time and devote all my attention to the books!
I’ll be curious to see the viewing figures, specifically if there was a drop between parts one and two. I’m not exactly what you’d call a Discworld fan, and watched more because vadim sold me the concept than a general interest in the subject matter. It was alright at best, though, and I’m not sure that I’ve have tuned in for the second episode if it hadn’t already been waiting for me.
